DALLAS - A Texas family says their pet pit bull helped protect their missing 3-year-old after she wandered away and got lost in the woods. Little Zoey Smith is bubbly and chatty. It’s hard to tell she survived the six-hour ordeal alone with only her dog Brownie.

“I’m so glad that we found her and that she came back because that usually doesn’t happen. And, she’s my angel and I wouldn’t know what to do without her,” said Stephanie Smith, the girl’s mother.

The toddler was playing outside Thursday afternoon at her grandmother’s house in rural Van Zandt County. She told investigators she wandered away because she was following Brownie who was chasing a raccoon.

She describes going through water. “I got wet and I was cold,” Zoey said.

A team of volunteers and law enforcement agents kept up an intense search after the sun went down. Zoey was found just after 7 p.m. about a mile and a half away from where she was last seen.

Jason Smith and his son had jumped on their four-wheelers to help search their property. “I walked up to her and I said ‘Hey’ a little bit loud and she just kind of looked at me. And she said, ‘I’m cold. I’m cold.’ She just kept saying that. That’s what I think she was saying. And for a split second I saw a grin on her face,” he said.

“I was happy, happy,” Zoey said.

Jason Smith said Zoey’s dog was very protective of her and at first wouldn’t even let him get close. He points out it was clear Brownie never left her side.

But it does pay homage to Ferris Bueller, which is something? And it does do a great job at selling something: The certainty that no one should ever try to make a Ferris Bueller sequel.

Rashad Alakbarov from Azerbaijan is “painting” with light in ways that don’t even seem possible. He organizes found objects into formations that cast light and shadows onto walls in the most spectacular creations.

Also known as the “master of shadows,” Alakbarov plays with the ideas of concealing and revealing with his giant installations. Upon initial view, his pieces are seemingly in disarray. After further investigation, the viewer discovers a painting of shadows and light cast on the wall and is able to look at the piece in a different way, with a fresh, new set of eyes. The final results are mesmerizing. This work is currently on view through January 29 at De Pury Gallery in London.

This brings me to facebook Timeline. Try scanning someone’s Timeline. It’s a very unpleasant experience. When information is organized in a list, it’s trivially easy to scan it, but with Timeline your eye has to dart around and try to combine the layout into an understanding of what the person’s been up to. It induces cognitive strain and brings [the logical, slow thinking part of our brains] online.

There was an interesting post a few weeks ago about how Timeline’s core goal is to reconceptualize brands in the eyes of users, and integrate them into the stream of data we see. When we usually see ads, [the fast, shallow processing part of our brains] processes and largely ignores them. But if Timeline causes [the logical, slow thinking part of our brains] to come online, then displays ads to it, facebook will be changing the way our brains process advertising. Timeline also makes branded posts (ads) look nearly identical to the actual content we’re on facebook to see, so it follows that they’d be processed similarly.

This all reminds of a recent quote about the state of the world. Paraphrasing, “the smartest people in the world are working hard to come up with ways to get you to click on ads.” … And it’s absolutely true, Google, Facebook, Microsoft and the like are brain trusts. People recognize that advertising is about psychology, and the bible of psychological decision making was just published. Why wouldn’t these smart people try to use these new tools to make more money? Timeline is just awful, but these people are too smart and skilled to make something so bad accidentally.
